Literature, poetry in particular, stands out among the arts in Chile. Two Chilean poets, Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, have won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1945 and 1971, respectively),  and along with Vicente Huidobro and NicanorParra, two other well-known 20th century poets, play an important role in the world of Hispanic literature. More recently, Isabel Allende novels has become known worldwide. 

The most famous international Chilean musician has long been the late pianist Claudio Arrau. Roberto Bravo and Alfredo Perl, also pianists, perform throughout the world. Composers such as Enrique Soro and Juan Orrego are noted in the Latin American world of music while Verónica Villarroel and Cristina Gallardo are world renowned opera singers. 

Santiago is the hub of museums and art galleries where the works of Chilean and foreign artists are displayed and sold. Painters Roberto Matta and Claudio Bravo, and sculptor Marta Colvin are among the best-known Chilean artists.

Finally, contemporary folk music, particularly tonadas (poetic tunes accompanied by guitar), had its best days in the sixties and early seventies, when protest and social content songs were popular. Violeta Parra, who died in 1969, excelled in this style.
